Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of giving?

As believers in Jesus, we are called to give to God and others. Giving brings us closer to the heart of God and makes us more like Him. It is one of the ways in which God strengthens our faith, heals us of our self-centeredness, and shows His kindness to others.

Throughout the Bible there are examples of individuals giving offerings, whether a tenth of their first crops or a widow giving two small coins. What matters is not the amount, but the attitude in which it is given. As Christians we are to give with a cheerful, generous, and sacrificial heart. Our money, our time, and our talents are all gifts from God and in return should be given back as an act of worship and thanksgiving. (Genesis 4:3-5, Leviticus 27:30, Mark 12:41-44, 2 Corinthians 9:7)

What do our tithes and offerings support?

The annual budget of Birch St. includes local and global outreach, funding ministries and events, pastoral and ministry staff salaries, and facility improvements and maintenance. We operate on an approved 12-month budget. We also only spend what comes in. So, if giving is behind budget, then we cut back on spending to keep it in line with giving. If there is surplus money available at the end of the year, our staff and Elders determine where those funds would be best used. Funds may be allocated to a savings account and/or to a special facility need or project.

Does Birch St. tithe?

Yes. Birch Street Friends Church gives about ten percent of our annual budget towards ministries outside of itself in a couple different capacities.

We are a part of the Friends Southwest denomination and we give a percentage of our monthly income to it; this is referred to as First Fruits. The denomination provides many resources, trainings, and employs a supportive staff that our family of churches funds. Birch St. also supports local and global missionaries and outreach projects. Missionary support and service projects are determined by our Local and Global Outreach Team.
